Choosing the Best Rolled Sod Variety for Your Land

To choose the best variety of sod for your lawn, it's important to evaluate two essential elements: sunlight exposure and foot traffic level. By answering these questions, you can select the sod best suited to your needs.

1. How many hours of sun per day does your lawn receive?

Sunlight exposure is one of the most important factors in choosing a turf variety. Generally, sod needs 6 to 8 hours of sun per day to promote good root growth, healthy development, and good density.

The Shade LEED variety is the only one that adapts better to less sunny areas, requiring approximately 4 to 6 hours of sun per day.

When your lawn receives less than 4 to 5 hours of sunlight, it's best to consider other landscaping options, such as mulch, pavers, or other landscape materials better suited for very shaded areas.

2. Is there a lot of foot traffic in the area to be sodded?

The level of foot traffic also plays an important role in choosing your sod variety.

High foot traffic generally corresponds to a lawn where children, a dog, or several people frequently circulate.
Normal foot traffic corresponds more to moderate use, such as walking on the lawn daily without intensive use.

Here's how our varieties perform:

  • Shade LEED: suitable for shaded areas, but tolerates very little foot traffic;
  • Kentucky Bluegrass: offers good resistance to regular use;
  • Kentucky Sport: ideal for areas subject to more intense foot traffic.
